Junior school

The Junior Secondary Program (Years 7 – 9) sets the platform for quality performance and subject choice in the Senior Years.A careful balance of a quality academic program combined with the nurturing of student wellbeing and leadership lays a strong foundation of a mature young adult entering Senior School for years 10 -12.

The Junior Secondary Curriculum provides students the opportunity to solidify skills in key core areas whilst also being exposed to a wide range of Experience and Elective subjects.

Curriculum organisation

Compulsory curriculum:

All students participate in a compulsory curriculum throughout the years of Junior Secondary. Some of the subjects now use the Australian Curriculum while others follow the Queensland Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting framework.

Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 will study a compulsory curriculum in the following areas.  There is an extra time allocation to developing Literacy and Numeracy skills in Years 7 and 8.

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Humanities – History and Geography
  • Languages – Japanese or German (optional in Year 9)
  • Health and Physical Education

Experience subjects:

Students in Year 7 engage in new learning experiences which expose them to a range of contexts in specialist facilities with our expert teachers over the course of the year.

Students will be able to experience some of the following options:

  • Paddock to Plate
  • Digital Technologies
  • Performance
  • Visual Art
  • Design Technologies

Elective subjects:

Year 8 students choose two (2) & Yr 9 students choose four (4) subjects from a range of curriculum areas. Each subject is one semester in length. This supports a more individualised development of interest and success.
Subjects may include:
  • Agricultural Practices
  • Visual Art
  • Design Technologies
  • Music
  • Performance
  • Food & Fibre
  • Dance
  • Digital Media
  • Business Studies
  • Drama

Junior academy:

Wilsonton State High School’s belief in every student to achieve ensures that a pathway is provided for every student to reach their full potential.  The Junior Academy program aims to take bright minds and grow them for a successful future in the 21st century.

Eligible and invited students will be able to participate in a range of extension classes and enrichments programs and a 10 week specialised intensive program.  Junior Academy Students inYear 8 will also have the opportunity to participate in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Program.

Student wellbeing:

In addition to an extensive Academic Program, Student Wellbeing remains a high priority across the school.  Specifically in Junior Secondary, each Year Level has a Year Level Coordinator who supports students in their wellbeing through an extensive LifeSkills Program, a Peer Buddy system and extra-curricular events such as Camps, Adventure Days and Reward Events.
